Myomo TherapyStroke is the country's leading cause of serious long-term disability, according to the American Heart Association. Reports indicate that approximately 50% of people who survive a stroke have one-sided paralysis. Two thirds have residual neurological deficits that persistently impair function. Only 5% of stroke survivors regain full arm function after stroke. Relearning how to move hemiparetic limbs is a significant challenge for many stroke survivors. Due to the destruction of brain cells and neurological pathways caused by the stroke, many patients have difficulty controlling movement of their affected muscles. For decades, research scientists presumed that the chances of a stroke survivor's recovery would plateau after the first three-to-six months following a stroke. Fortunately, scientific evidence now suggests that the opportunity for stroke recovery persists well beyond that window of time. The Myomo e100 NeuroRobotic System is an advanced medical device that non-invasively engages and reinforces both neurological and motor pathways to facilitate motor recovery after stroke. The device has shown clinically meaningful results in severe chronic stroke patients with hemiparetic upper extremity limbs (1.5 to 10 years after onset of their neurological injuries.) Am. J. Phys. Med. Rehabil. Vol. 86. No. 4. 2007. Click here to learn about the Myomo e100 NeuroRobotic System.
